Ten years in the past, one might say Flax, Pennsylvania was in it’s Prime State. It had everything a small town really needed to survive. A movie theatre and mall, a few restaurants and a warm beach, a huge hotel for any passing tourists, enough small businesses to keep the citizen’s employed and at the very base of it all, Mammoth Academy.
The beautiful high school, set smack dab in the middle of Flax was the town’s claim to fame and the gem that all the local teenagers attended. A new greenhouse department had just been built in place of the old dormitories and more teachers hired to keep up with the steadily growing number of students. Of course, like every other high school, drama unfolded inside on a daily basis and that generation’s students did nothing to stop it, instead stirring the pot further. Shooting’s and pregnancies, betrayal and lies, love lost along with classmates and friends. All events that took place on a week to week basis.
That was then….
Now, ten years later it is 2019. A new age and generation has inhabited Flax. Townhouse complexes and large buildings have sprung up where flowers used to. More highways run in and out of the city along with a steady stream of visitors, more lethal than just regular tourists. There is a constant flow of people on the sidewalks and places that used to be virtually unpopulated now host a vast majority of citizens. The jail that was formerly nothing more than a small collection of cells has been expanded to keep up with the ever rising crime rate. Very little of this town's previous beauty still remains.
This generation’s predecessors are returning in flocks to their hometown to raise children and make a living. The former of the two proof of what years ago, made headlines. Yet, there are others who appeared out of the blue after years of minimal contact with anyone from their high school days. What are they really doing back? And in typical Flax fashion, anything and anyone is game, from illegal organized crime to the world’s biggest stars. Do you spy a drug addict or a Deadbeat Dad? Married men visit old flings in the dark of the night while their wives sleep unperturbed. The same fights ensue between old rivals, except now over more pressing issues. Adoption and Depression, Marriages, Children and of course, Money. Will they ever leave behind their old arguments, drop grudges at the corner and embrace one another in forgiveness?
Most importantly, a new group of teenagers, both spoiled and starving now attend Mammoth. They walk the halls as if nobody has before them. September looms and along with it the ever present, never changing genre of drama that student revel in and staff revolt against. What should be expected from this generation’s students? Will they keep up the same frivolous pattern that hundreds before them have or will Mammoth see something it never has before? Will it remain that words of chagrin are scribbled across the bathroom walls about teachers having sex with their students? The seniors making money selling Marijuana to the freshman? What about that nose job the whore got over summer vacation? Does anything really change, or is it all just an ever turning wheel?
So many questions and only one foolproof way to answer them all; Just let it be.
This is now…
