All her life, Carter had thrived in all intellectual environments. She'd been classified as a rich bitch, a stupid bitch, a slutty bitch, you know, anything you could put with the word bitch (with some nicer sentiments in there from people who actually liked her). However, none of those bothered her more than when someone called her stupid. Carter was pro at not letting anything get under her skin, especially words. But for some reason, stupid was just something she couldn't handle. All throughout high school, she was in the top five of her class. It surprised most people, especially her, Carter having an aptitude for learning and succeeding in her classes. People just thought she was so eclectic she'd never really do very well in her classes. Well, she surprised them, certainly. So when she started college, it surprised people even more that she enjoyed the challenge of it. It wasn't just the chance she had to stretch that brain muscle of hers, but also the escape from her home and her life was she submersed herself in her school work. It was her fool proof excuse to get out of anyting her parents wanted to drag her to. So, that just made a college a double plus.
Carter was sure that when she had applied to colleges, her parents would just be satisfied that she was even attending one. She got accepted to three universities in the US of quite honorable mention, University in Sydney, and Columbia University. She'd been tempted to stay in Sydney, but by some strange lapse of judgement she'd agreed to come back to America to live with her parents. Carter hadn't really had a choice of which college to choose after that, but for some reason her parents had become very upset with her for applying anywhere other Columbia. Why did you even think of applying any place else? They'd asked her angrily, Imagine the type of people you'd be surrounded by any place other than Ivy League! Carter, in all her anger, lashed out, saying, Better than the people I'm surrounded by in my own home. I couldn't imagine anyone more monstrous than that. They'd promptly left her alone after that, save for a few withering looks sent her way by her mother. There was no surprise that there was bad blood there, considering her mother blamed her for the death of her brother. But who said Carter didn't even blame herself? Really, the negative attention her mother gave her was something she didn't need, and just made her a hundred percent sure that she needed to move out as soon as she possibly could.
Luckily enough for Carter, she hadn't even cemented the idea down in her mind and she already had a prospective room mate, who went by the very attractive name of Jesse Pierce. In all honesty, Carter would be more than happy to move in with that pretty boy who made sweeping her off her feet seem so easy. However, in situations like this with Carter, there was almost always a 'but' involved. This time taht but had to do with her fear of her adequacy for him. Jesse deserved nothing less than someone who could appreciate him truly and completely. She was also scared of the way things were just so damn easy around him. So easy to just wind down and be herself. So easy to allow Jesse to take pictures of her which seemed to capture the essence of her very soul. So easy to fall head over heels in love with him. Never, ever in her entire life had naything ever been taht easy, and she was scared that there would bes ome kind of cath. Not only that, but Carter was pro at effectively screwing things up for herself, not taht she ever let anyone see taht, of course. Except for Jesse. Jesse saw all of her, all the time, and it was so surreal. This brought her to another thing. Did she really want to be with someone who she felt so mentally and emotionally naked and vulnerable around? Or maybe a better question was: did she really want to take down the last of the walls within her, the ones she spent so long building?
Carter started blankly at her laptop, her fingers poised limply over the keys as if to continue writing that essay she was supposed to be working on in the first place, instead of getting all wrapped up in this certain enthralling train of thought. She normally came to this little coffee shop near campus to get some work down in between her classes, but today was different. She didn't have any classes until the next afternoon, and she was just feeling in the mood to work a little. Besides, the buzz of college students circulating in and out, along with the comforting sounds of the coffee machines working was overall a balm to her normally hyper and eclectic personality. Strangely enough, the bustle seemed to help her think better strange as that might be. Carter reached out her coffee cup, lifting it to take a drink. She was surprised to find that it was empty, and she really needed a refill. A caffeine jolt was always necessary for her. She got up, and walked to the line, waiting rather patiently as she worked her way up. She asked for the same drink she got before, and walked to the place where they set them when they were done. Shortly, her drink was there and Carter moved back to sit down at her table.
She took a long sip, sighing and sitting back in her chair and looking at her screen, beginning to type once more. She was so focused on her work she almost missed the little click she heard behind her, like the click of a camera. Carter stopped moving, heat flowing through her body at the same speed her slow smile spread across her face. That click was something she heard almost every other day. That click only ever happened when a certain person was in her presence, a certain person by the name of Jesse Pierce. Carter turned in her seat, looking over and her eyes resting on him. Her smile widened to a full blown grin, and she stood, almost bouncing over to him and wrapping her arms around his waist. "I figured there was only one person who would be crazy enough to take pictures of me... Guess I was right, huh?" She looked up at him, that warm feeling becoming more intense with her arms wrapped around him. She really could never get enough of that good feeling. "We really can't take two day long breaks from each other. I mean, really. It's slightly unhealthy, consider I start pining after your company in a matter of hours." She laughed softly, reluctantly pulling out of his arms.
